Located in southern Montgomery County, Maryland, Silver Spring sits directly north of Washington, DC and provides plenty of recreational opportunities, cultural events, an AFI Theatre, some historical sites, and an abundance of public transportation.

Adjacent to the DC-Maryland State Line

Silver Spring’s odd shape is roughly bounded by Western Avenue NW and Eastern Avenue to the south—which is also the DC-Maryland state line—Rock Creek Stream is to the west, Dennis Avenue to the north, and the Northwest Branch Anacostia River completes the city’s boundaries to the east. Wheaton-Glenmont borders the area to the north, Chevy Chase and later Bethesda are to the west, and Takoma Park, Langley Park, and Adelphi are to the east. To the south is Washington, DC, with the closest DC neighborhood being Takoma. Other neighborhoods within reach are Aspen Hill, College Park, Kensington, and Hyattsville.

Named for a Mica-Flecked Spring

Silver Spring takes its name from a mica-flecked spring discovered in the area in 1840 by Francis Preston Blair, who subsequently bought much of the surrounding land. Acorn Park, tucked away in south Silver Spring, is believed to be the site of the original spring. Some notable landmarks in Silver Spring are the world headquarters of Discovery Communications, the AFI Silver Theatre, the NOAA headquarters, the headquarters of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and the national headquarters of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. Some sites listed on the National Registry of Historic Places include the Polychrome Historic District, Silver Spring B&O Railroad Station, and the Rachel Carson House.

Public Transportation

The Capital Beltway can be accessed from Route 97, 650, and 29. Route 29 is a direct shot to downtown DC and the National Mall. Silver Spring is serviced by the Brunswick Line of the MARC Train, Metrorail Red Line, Metrobus, Ride On, and the free VanGo. The bus terminal at the Silver Spring Rail Station is the busiest in the entire Washington Metro area, and provides connections between several transit services, including those mentioned above. I-495 bisects the area and is the main east-west road in the neighborhood, while some other major roads in Silver Spring include Route 410, 320, and 193 which links the town to the University of Maryland.

Urban & Suburban Living

The urbanized, oldest, and southernmost part of Silver Spring is a major business hub that lies at the north apex of Washington, DC. It is here where you will mostly find condominiums and newly developed apartment buildings. The more suburban neighborhoods have recently undergone a significant renaissance, with the addition of major retail, residential, and office developments being built in the area. Single-family detached homes and townhouses can be found in the suburban areas, while properties located along Sligo Creek provide wonderful recreational possibilities.

Best Places for Dining, Bar-Hopping, & Entertainment

Dining in Silver Spring is extremely varied. You can find anything from Ethiopian and Vietnamese, to Italian and Lebanese. The Classics is that and more. Situated on Colesville Road in downtown Silver Spring, this steakhouse serves up some delicious aged beef butchered on the premises, and seafood all in a white-tablecloth setting. Ghar-E-Kabab is just down the street on Wayne Avenue and is an organic Indian and Nepali fare that draws in plenty of fans for their ivory-accented spot, full menu, and lunch buffet. Favorite dishes among the locals are the chicken tikka masala and the salmon salad. Samantha’s Restaurant is a more modest spot located on University Boulevard. This hideaway Pan-Latin eatery serves Mexican fajitas, Salvadorian pupusas, and some meaty Argentine dishes and more. Other notable restaurants and bars in Silver Spring include Jackie’s Restaurant & Sidebar, Parkway Deli & Restaurant, Mi Rancho, 8407 Kitchen Bar, and Downtown Silver Spring.

The downtown area is also home to the Fillmore. This live music venue provides big-name artists and national acts all in a spacious music venue with several bars, decks, and ornate decor. AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center is a hotspot for movie buffs and tourists. Located on Colesville Road, this historic cinema hosts a series of film festivals as well as new and classic movies plus documentaries.

Cultural & Recreational Activities

One of the most notable festivals in the downtown area is the Silverdocs documentary film festival held each June and hosted by Discovery Communications and the American Film Institute. However, the biggest event of the year is the Silver Spring Jazz Festival which has drawn in over 20,000 people for this wonderful free event. Some previous acts have been local jazz artists, high school band battles, and such national and international acts like Sergio Mendes and Chick Corea.

Sligo Creek Park follows Sligo Creek through Silver Spring and offers hiking trails, tennis courts, playgrounds and bicycling lanes. Rock Creek Park also flows along its namesake creek and features hiking trails, picnic grounds, and trails for pedestrians and bicyclists. Other parks in the area include Acorn Park, Jesup Blair Park, Wheaton Regional Park, and Nolte Local Park.

The fourth most populous place in Maryland, after Baltimore, Columbia, and Germantown, Silver Spring is slowly becoming a hotspot destination for newly developed properties. Retail, residential, and office developments have seen an increase, and it’s no wonder as the town provides wonderful parks, cultural events, Metro and MARC stations, and it’s close to DC.
